Some Quick and Easy Saving Tips

September 15th, 2009 at 08:43 pm

Shop once a week:
The more trips you make the likelier you are to buy on impulse. About two-thirds of purchases are unplanned.

Bottled Water:
Stop drinking bottled water and instead buy a filter for your faucet. Could save you up to $20 a month.

Save Gas:
Keep tires inflated properly. Keeping them properly inflated can improve your mileage by about 3%. Also keep your trunk, an extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your miles-per-gallon by up to 2%.

ATM Fees:
Use only your own bank's ATMs or skip the ATM and get cash back when you're paying for groceries with your debit card. At $2-$4 a pop you could save a lot of money over a years time.

Nice suggestions. I also suggest eating something before you shop for groceries. When you're hungry, you're more likely to buy stuff you don't need.

These are great tips. I think that shopping once per week does lead to saving money and avoid impulse purchases. The ATM idea is great as long as you are not overseas and getting hammered on ATM fees right and left (like we are). We are hoping to swap our banking to USAA (who does our insurance) since they don't charge overseas ATM fees. That will save us a bundle!

I forgot to mention the water tip, as well... bottled water is the rage over here, and it leads to a lot of waste. There are mineral springs all over this city, and if you have a durable container you can refill for free and have the added insurance of some of the freshest and most tasty water in SE Europe! That's what I am doing now with my new steel water bottle. =)
